The OSFA Financial Aid counseling staff are full-time
professionals with diverse educational and professional backgrounds. However,
they all have one thing in common: the desire to help people.
Financial Aid Counselors are responsible for counseling and advising students
and parents about federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs,
policies, and procedures. OSFA counselors are scheduled
on a rotating basis to cover telephone and walk-in counseling. When they
are not scheduled for counseling, they verify financial aid applications
and prepare students' files for the awarding process. The counselors are
also responsible for revising awards, presenting financial aid information
to various groups on and off campus, and helping with other projects in
the office.
The counselors work closely with the aid administrators who are responsible for program areas. In the majority of situations, counselors are able to answer questions without consulting an administrator; however, there are situations when a consultation is required. In these instances, the counselor may have to schedule a follow-up visit with the student or parent.
Because financial crises for students and parents can arise at any time and federal regulations are subject to change, the job of a Financial Aid Counselor can be quite challenging. The work is demanding at times, but always rewarding!
