Work-Study is a part-time employment program for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are at least half-time students and demonstrate financial need. The maximum amount a student can earn under this program is determined by financial need.

A variety of jobs are offered through the Work-Study Program, both at on-campus and a limited number of off-campus work sites.

Work-study earnings vary. The maximum award is $3,500 for the academic year ($2,500 for freshmen and transfer students).

Benefits of Work-Study

The following are some of the benefits of the Work-Study Program:

  1. Pay for educational expenses without incurring loan indebtedness.

  2. Potentially increase future financial need. Work-Study earnings are not used in calculating your student contribution while non-Work-Study earnings are used in this calculation. However, Work-Study earnings are taxable income and will appear on your W-2 Form and must be used as part of your adjusted gross income for federal and state tax purposes.

  3. Gain valuable experience through working with professionals who can serve as role models.

  4. Develop a greater understanding of personal skills, talents, interests and limitations.

  5. Gain cooperative education transcript notation if your Work-Study job meets certain academic/professional criteria. Contact The University of Iowa Career Center for more information.
