Guided Independent Study (GIS) Guided Independent Study (GIS) courses are treated the same as all other University courses for financial aid purposes. To be considered for financial aid, you must be enrolled at least half-time (six hours for an undergraduate student and five hour for a graduate student) in a degree program.
