Guided Independent Study

When verifying the number of hours for which a student is registered to determine financial aid eligibility, Guided Independent Study (GIS) courses are treated the same as on-campus courses.

To apply for financial aid, students must follow the application procedures provided in our Step-By-Step Process web page. A student must be admitted to a University of Iowa (UI) degree program and enrolled at least half-time at the UI in order to be eligible for federal financial aid. Half-time status is six hours for an undergraduate student, five hours for a graduate student, and three hours for both undergraduate and graduate students for the winter or summer session.
