International Student Financial Aid

Undergraduate Students

The University's sources of financial assistance for undergraduate international students are limited. Eligible first-year students may apply for the Presidential Scholarship and the National Scholars Award. In addition, certain programs such as engineering and music have some merit-based scholarships. Additional information on scholarships available to undergraduate international students is available on the Admissions International Scholarship web site. These scholarships are not adequate to cover all of a student's expenses at Iowa. Most undergraduate international students at Iowa are funded through personal sources such as their family, employer, or government. Information is also available on the Office of International Students and Scholars web site.

Graduate Students

Information on financial assistance for graduate students is available on the Admissions Financial Assistance web site and on the Office of International Students and Scholars web site. Assistance generally comes from the student's department or program, the Graduate College, or a combination of the two.

Employment Opportunities

Although it is possible to earn enough money to pay for room and board by working and living frugally, it is not possible to earn enough to pay for tuition.

Employment opportunities for students holding F-1 visas are limited by U.S. immigration regulations. F-1 students may work "on-campus" (for the University) without having to obtain anyone's permission. Many students do so, but the number of on-campus jobs available is limited and the pay ranges from the state of Iowa minimum wage ($7.25 per hour) on up. See the most recent wage survey for further details on wages. Most on-campus work involves either clerical or unskilled labor, such as positions in cafeterias, libraries, and hospital laboratories.

F-1 students can work "off-campus" only with governmental permission. This permission is difficult to obtain and is not granted during the first academic year of an international student's stay in the U.S.

Additional information regarding employment opportunities for international students is available on the Office of International Students and Scholars web site.
