A student must be admitted to a University of Iowa (UI) degree program and enrolled at least half-time (five UI hours for graduate students, six UI hours for undergraduate students, and three UI hours for winter or summer sessions) in order to be eligible for federal financial aid.
Federal financial aid regulations allow students to receive Federal Direct Loans (Federal Direct Stafford Loan, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, or Federal Direct PLUS Loan) for up to 12 consecutive months (fall, winter, spring, summer), if they meet the following criteria:
- Currently admitted or enrolled UI non-degree students (A9, A4, AE, E9, N9, G9, GE, or SE) who are required to take UI pre-requisite courses in order to be considered for admission to a degree program, must complete and submit the UI Non-Degree Student Status Form. UI undergraduate students must be registered for at least six hours and graduate students must be registered for at least five hours of pre-requisite courses during fall and spring terms. Winter and summer term enrollment requires at least three hours.
Federal financial aid regulations limit financial aid for pre-requisite coursework to one consecutive 12-month period. Once federal loans have been received for pre-requisite coursework, the 12-month countdown begins regardless of academic level (undergraduate/graduate). Eligible non-degree students who receive federal loans are allowed a once-in-a-lifetime exception for pre-requisite course enrollment.
UI pre-requisite courses cannot apply towards the intended degree program to be considered for non-degree aid. Guided Independent Study (GIS) courses and courses enrolled for at another college cannot be considered pre-requisite courses for non-degree federal financial aid at UI. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all other required forms. After we receive the documentation, we will notify students about their eligibility for the Federal Direct Loan Program. Annual loan maximums are as follows:
