To recognize students who have achieved high academic standards. Generally, academic merit is the major criterion, but other requirements may also be determining factors in receiving these awards. If a scholarship description indicates the award is to first-year students, this means undergraduates entering the University directly from high school. Information on the following first-year scholarships can be found on the Office of Admissions first-year scholarship web site
Advantage Iowa Award Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship To selected outstanding Iowa high school seniors. Value: Amount and number vary. Renewable for an additional three years if conditions of initial award are maintained. Contact: A client services representative at the Iowa College Student Aid Commission at 1-800-383-4222. Rhodes Dunlap Scholarship Information about this scholarship can be found on the University Honors Program web site.Virgil M. Hancher Award To a student in the last year of study in an undergraduate degree program. Based on academic excellence and leadership. No application is required; students must be nominated. Value: $1,000 (one award). Wynonna G. Hubbard Scholarship To a black woman who is a full-time student and within two years of receiving a bachelor's degree from The University of Iowa. Student must be maintaining a 3.00 grade-point average. Financial need is a consideration. No application is required; student must be nominated. Value: $1,500 (one award). Iowa Community College Transfer Academic Scholarship For selected students transferring directly from an Iowa community college who have earned 30 semester hours at the time of application and maintained a 3.85 cumulative transfer GPA. Value: $1000 (up to 35 awards). May be renewed for one additional year if the recipient first enrolls at the University of Iowa as a junior or for two additional years if the recipient first enrolls as a sophomore, if a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and full-time enrollment are maintained. Iowa Community College Transfer Scholarship To students who graduate from an Iowa community college with an associate of arts (AA) degree (without a prior bachelor's degree) and demonstrate financial need and academic merit. A cumulative transfer 3.00 grade-point average is required, and students must be enrolled full-time each semester. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all supporting documents should be submitted as soon as possible after January 1 for the upcoming year as funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. For first-time, first-year undergraduate dependent students (not transfer students) who are residents of Iowa and graduate in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class. The parent income must be at or below 150% of poverty level. Value: The total award will cover tuition, fees, room and board, and book expenses using a combination of grants, scholarships, and work-study from federal, state, University, and private sources. Go to the Iowa Pathways Program web site for additional information.Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Scholarships To the top five finalists of the annual University of Iowa Junior Science and Humanities Symposium high school competition. Value: $750 (five awards) Contact: William Swain, Opportunity at Iowa, 319-335-3876 Minority American Science Scholarship For an incoming first-year minority student (African American, Hispanic/Latino(a), Native American/American Indian, or refugee Southeast Asian) planning to major in the natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, or actuarial science. Must be a U.S. citizen and have a high-school grade-point average of 3.00. Value: Amount varies (one award). May be renewed for three additional years. William and Elizabeth Penningroth Award To the runner-up of the Virgil M. Hancher Award. No application is required; student must be nominated for the Virgil M. Hancher award. Value: $500 (one award). University of Iowa Phi Theta Kappa ScholarshipInformation and application is available on the admissions transfer scholarship web site. Truman Scholarship Information about this scholarship can be found on the University Honors Program web site. University Club Scholarship To a female college junior who is a resident of Iowa and has a 4.00 UI cumulative grade-point average. Financial need is a consideration. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered. Value: Amount varies; for spring semester of junior year (one award). University of Iowa Transfer Scholarship To students who have achieved a minimum 3.00 transfer grade-point average for at least 24 earned hours from another educational institution; must be enrolled full-time each semester and demonstrate financial need. FAFSA and all supporting documents should be submitted as soon as possible after January 1 for the upcoming year as funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are automatically considered for this scholarship once the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid receives the FAFSA information and other required documents (Iowa Verification Form and Parent/Student U.S. Income Tax Returns). Value: From $200 to resident tuition (number varies). University of Iowa Tuition ScholarshipTo entering first-year students to recognize their academic performance in high school. Must have either a high school class rank in the top 10% or a UI Admission Index Score [(2xACT Composite) plus high school percentile rank] of 136 or higher; must be enrolled full-time each semester and demonstrate financial need. FAFSA and all supporting documents should be submitted as soon as possible after January 1 for the upcoming year as funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are automatically considered for this scholarship once the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid receives the FAFSA information and other required documents (Iowa Verification Form and Parent/Student U.S. Income Tax Returns). University of Iowa Upperclass Tuition Scholarship To students who return to The University of Iowa for their second and subsequent undergraduate years.
