General Scholarships: Geographical

To students who were born in, reside in, or graduate from a high school in specific geographic locations. Additional criteria also may be required for these awards.

If a scholarship description indicates the award is to first-year students, this means undergraduates entering the University directly from high school.

Jacob Alfred Anderson

To an entering first-year student who is a graduate of an Iowa High School from Allamakee or Clayton counties.

Value: Amount and number varies.

Arens Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship

To an entering first-year student from Waverly-Shell Rock High School who demonstrates academic achievement and shows financial need.

Value: Amount varies (one award).

Deadline: Valid Admissions to the U of I by April 1st.

Arnold Trust Fund Award

To selected students who are orphans not over the age of 25 and who are residents of Linn County, Iowa. Based on financial need.

Leslie Asher Scholarship

To incoming freshmen graduates of Clarksville (Iowa) High School based on academic merit, with possibility of renewal. Need is a secondary consideration. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Wendell L. Bailey Fund

To entering first-year students from Clay Central High School with preference given to first-year students who resided in Royal, IA. Second preference given to all graduates from Clay Central High School. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: Up to full resident tuition (one award).

Helen Bennett Scholarship

To an entering first-year student who is a resident of Bennett, Iowa, and a graduate of Bennett High School. Financial need is considered. Student must be nominated.

Foster O. Blake Memorial Fund

Awarded to an incoming first-year student who is a graduate of Marshalltown (Iowa) High School. Must be enrolled full-time, making satisfactory academic progress, and have financial need. FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible after January 1 for upcoming academic year. No other application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Gwen and Lyle Brown Scholarship

To first-time students from Fort Madison, Iowa, High School or Clinton, Iowa, High School; or if no qualified candidates, then first-time graduates of Southeastern Community College or Clinton Community College. All candidates to demonstrate need and merit.

Eva M. Byerly Student Fund

To selected entering first-year students from Cedar Rapids (Iowa) public high schools who rank in the upper 25 percent of their graduating class. No application required; qualified students are automatically considered.

James & Zoe Connor Scholarship Fund

To an entering first-year students from Dubuque Senior High School with highest grade-point average of those planning to attend Iowa. Must have also been a member of the National Honor Society at Dubuque Senior. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Loretta and Leslie Copeland Scholarship

To a U.S. citizen, undergraduate student; first preference to students from Clarksville, Iowa, then from Butler, Bremer, or Floyd (Iowa) counties. Students with lower grade-point average have first preference. Based on financial need. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Ruth Ann Daly Scholarship

To freshmen students from Johnson County, Iowa who demonstrate financial need.

Alice and Eldon Davis Scholarship

To a graduating senior from Dubuque (Iowa) Senior High School. The scholarship attempts to identify students with high academic potential who may have not yet achieved that level. Potential recipients will be in the upper half of the graduating high school class and at or above the 75th percentile on the ACT test. Financial need a secondary consideration; award based on Dubuque Senior High School recommendation. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: $1,000 (one award).

Marja and Sabrina Davis Debate Scholarship

To an entering first-year student from Dubuque (Iowa) Senior High School in upper one half of graduating class, and minimum 27 ACT. Preference shown to those who have participated in a debate program at Dubuque Senior High School, or who have an interest in or intent to participate in the intercollegiate debate program at The University of Iowa; financial need a tie-breaker. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Sharon Anthony Davis Scholarship

To a female senior from Dubuque (Iowa) Senior High School who ranks in the upper one third of her graduating class. Financial need is considered. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: $1,500 (one award).

Wilbur H. Dosland Fund

To an incoming first-year student from Calamus-Wheatland, Midland, or Central Clinton (Iowa) high schools. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: Up to resident tuition (one award).

Charles E. Fahrney Foundation

To selected full-time students who are residents of Wapello County (Iowa) attending an Iowa college or university and making satisfactory progress toward a degree; renewable.

Value: Up to $1,500 (number varies).

Scott German Scholarship

To selected entering first-year students from Maquoketa, Iowa. Financial need is considered. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

William and Joy Greene Scholarship

To first-time undergraduate students who have graduated from an Iowa high school located in either Johnson or Linn County.

Value: Number and amounts vary.

Harry H. & Nellie B. Griffith Fund

To entering first-year students from Wilton, Iowa, or any town within a 25-mile radius of Wilton, Iowa, with full-time enrollment status. May be renewed up to three years if full-time enrollment status and 2.00 UI cumulative grade-point average maintained. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Jay Gross Scholarship Fund

To an entering first-year student from Jefferson High, Cedar Rapids, IA. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Donald and Ethel Hamdorf Scholarship

To provide support to first-year students from Clinton County, Iowa, who demonstrate financial need. No application is required; qualified students from the April 1st first-year student admissions list are automatically considered.

Otto H. & Ethel Bohart Henningsen

Awarded to a worthy University of Iowa student from Clinton County (Iowa). Academic merit primary factor and need secondary. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Terry and Pam Hopper Fund

To provide support to needy first-year students from Webster County, Iowa.

Value: $2,000 renewable depending upon funding and academics.

Contact: Candidates will automatically be considered from the APRIL 1st Freshman Admit list - no application is required.

Walter and Ida Kansky Memorial Scholarship

To needy entering first-year students who are graduates of an Iowa High School from Linn County, IA.

Value: $1000; 5 awards.

Contact: No application required, qualified students are automatically considered. This award is not renewable.

Elmer H. and Florence Krueger Gabel

To an incoming freshman graduate of Muscatine or Charles City (Iowa) high schools. Based on academic merit, with need as a secondary consideration. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: Resident tuition (one award).

Joan Lahart-Van Bortel Endowed Scholarship

To an entering freshman woman who resides in or has graduated from a Lucas County (Iowa) high school. Based on academic merit; financial need also will be considered.

Value: Up to resident tuition and a book allotment (one non-renewable award).

Contact: If your browser includes the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in you may view and print an application for the Joan Lahart-Van Bortel Endowed Scholarship. (If you do not have the Acrobat plug-in, you may download it for free from the Adobe website. Once you have installed the plug-in, you are then ready to view and print the application.) If you are unable to download or use the plug-in, you may request an application from high school counselors at Chariton and Russell High Schools (available in early February).

Lappin Family Scholarship Fund

To graduates of Rock Island High School who plan to attend The University of Iowa as undergraduates. Must be a member of the National Honor Society. Financial need a minor consideration. May be renewed for up to an additional three years if a 2.50 UI cumulative grade-point average is maintained.

Value: $750 (renewable).

Dr. Carl E. and Edna Liabo Scholarship

To an entering freshman who shows financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with preference given to students from Linn County, Iowa. The scholarship may be renewable for up to three additional years as long as the recipient remains in good standing at The University of Iowa and shows financial need by filing the FAFSA each year.

Morris & Lenore Mandelbaum Family Fund

Awarded to graduates of a Des Moines (Iowa) area high school with financial need who intend to pursue a career in the social sciences, i.e., political science, economics, history, sociology, or international relations. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

John T. and Thelma V. McColm Scholarship

To an entering freshman graduate of West Liberty or Louisa-Muscatine (Iowa) high schools. May be renewed. Financial need is considered. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Dick and Donna McKay ScholarshipNEW

To first-time students who graduate from Waterloo, Iowa high schools or second priority to high schools in Blackhawk County, Iowa. Based upon financial need and potential for academic success.

Edward Arthur Mellinger Education Foundation, Inc.

To selected residents who live in the following western Illinois counties: Fulton, Henderson, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Warren. Application and additional information is available at www.mellinger.org.

H.S. Ostlin Memorial Scholarship
(This scholarship is temporarily unavailable.)

To incoming first-year students from high schools in the central Iowa counties of Jasper, Marion, Polk, Warren, Story, Marshall, and Dallas. Preference given to engineering students. Academic achievement in high school considered. May be renewed. It may not be possible to award this scholarship in future years due to funding shortage.

Value: $1,000 (one award).

Mary L. Padovan Scholarship Fund

To needy first-year student graduates of Centerville High School, Centerville, Iowa.

Value: Varies (depending on funding)

Timothy O. Peck Memorial Scholarship

To an entering first-year student who graduated from Bettendorf (Iowa) High School in the top 30 percent of the class. Must have ACT composite of 24 or better. Financial need is considered. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: $800 to $1,000 (one award).

Willard A. Peterson Scholarship

To students from Rock Island County, Illinois, preparing for a career in public health.

Value: Number and amount vary.

Mary & Bill Richardson Fund

To provide support to first-year student graduates from Clarinda and South Page CSD(1st), Page County high schools(2nd), then Taylor County high schools. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. If no qualified candidates from above, then may consider ANY Iowa resident!!!!

Value: $1000, renewable for an additional 3 years

Virginia Es'Dorn Rigler and Robert R. Rigler Scholarship

To first generation students of promise as identified by the Office of Admissions. Preference to needy rural Iowa residents.

Ronald Rohling Scholarship

To an entering first-year student who is a graduate of Muscatine (Iowa) High School and who plans to enroll full-time.

Value: $1,250 (one award).

Roller Family Memorial Scholarship

To selected graduates of English Valley (North English, Iowa) High School planning to major in medicine, law, business administration, or music. Financial need is considered. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: $1,000 (two awards).

Edward J. Schwartz Perpetual Educational Trust Fund

Awarded to residents of Wapello County (Iowa) who are attending The University of Iowa full-time, based on scholastic performance, leadership, citizenship, and financial need.

Value: Up to $1,500 (number varies).

Kevin Sinnard Memorial Scholarship

To a college junior or senior in good academic standing who is a resident of Iowa or Illinois majoring in business, engineering, medical technology, or biochemistry. Financial need is considered. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: $1,000; one award per year (rotated among designated majors).

Frederick and Mary Sperry Family Scholarship

To an entering first-year student from Clarinda (Iowa) High School with a minimum high school grade-point average of 3.50. Must be premedicine, predentistry, engineering, business, or liberal arts and sciences major. No application is required; qualified students are automatically considered.

Value: $2,500 (one award).

Robert P. Stack Memorial Scholarship

To an entering first-year student from each of the three Iowa City (Iowa) high schools who shows academic merit, potential, and financial need. No application is required; students must be nominated.

Value: Up to $1,000; 3 annual awards.

L. R. Stock ScholarshipNEW

To first-year students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit who are graduates of high schools in either Allamakee or Winneshiek counties.

Henry B. Tippie University of Iowa Scholarship

To selected graduates of Belle Plaine (Iowa) Community Schools, with preference to business majors. May be renewed dependent upon maintaining a 2.50 UI cumulative grade-point average and full-time enrollment status. Students must be nominated by Belle Plaine High School Scholarship Committee.

Value: $3,000 (two awards).

University of Iowa Community Credit Union (UICCU) ScholarshipNEW

To entering first-year students with preference given to those who are UICCU members and residents of the following Iowa counties: Johnson, Linn, Washington, Muscatine, Iowa, Louisa, Cedar, Poweshiek, Benton, Tama, Jasper, Marshall, Keokuk and Mahaska. Based on financial need and students will be selected from the University of Iowa Old Gold Scholarship pool. This scholarship is not renewable.

Value: Ten annual scholarships for $1,000 each. At least three of the ten scholarships will be awarded to students to help fulfill the UI commitment to diversity.

Randall Wallace Van Oel Scholarship

To first-year students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit who are graduates of Des Moines, Iowa Roosevelt High School.

Florence Warnock Scholarship

Awarded annually to a graduating senior from a Black Hawk County (Iowa) high school who has a 3.00 high school grade-point average. Must have filed a financial aid application and show need, be an active member in a church-synagogue, and demonstrate character, citizenship, and leadership qualities.

Value: $1,250 (one award).

Larry & Jeanette Waters Endowed Fund

No application is required; students will be chosen by appropriate high school scholarship committees.
