Information for Past Loan Recipients

Federal regulations require that the Office of Student Financial Aid be notified either by the student or the Registrar's Office when a student withdraws from the University without current financial aid but with past loans. Based on this notification, the following information is being provided to you regarding the grace period for your loans, part-time employment, and Reasonable Academic Progress Standards.

The Office of Student Financial Aid is responsible for notifying your lender of the date of your withdrawal.

Your grace period for loan repayments for Federal Unsubsidized and Subsidized Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, and HEAL Loans will begin on the day of your withdrawal from the University. Contact your lender if you have questions regarding your grace period or repayment status.

If you withdraw from the University, your employment under the part-time hourly employment program will be terminated.

Your eligibility for future financial aid may change based on your withdrawal from the University. The University of Iowa Reasonable Academic Progress (RAP) Standards require that an undergraduate who enrolls for two terms of an academic school year must complete twenty-two semester hours (twelve semester hours for a graduate student) by the end of an academic school year (fall and spring semesters plus the subsequent summer session).

If you are unable to earn the required semester hours over the academic year due to your withdrawal, you will either be placed on RAP probation and remain eligible for financial aid during the probationary term or will become ineligible for aid if you have not met the minimum requirements for the second time.

In addition, if you withdraw from both fall and spring semesters of an academic school year, you are no longer eligible for financial aid. If you wish to establish future financial aid eligibility, you must file a RAP appeal.

Also, if you withdraw during a RAP probation term, you will not be eligible for financial aid until another RAP appeal is accepted or you have completed the necessary hours and met the GPA requirement of the RAP Standards without financial aid.
