Unofficial Withdrawal

If you are receiving financial aid and quit attending classes (unofficially withdraw), it may be necessary for the Office of Student Financial Aid to reduce your aid eligibility and refund a portion of your financial aid back to the original funding source.

Federal financial aid recipients who are not attending class are identified on the mid-semester class list by class instructors. If you are identified as no longer attending at the half-time enrollment level (six hours undergraduate and five hours graduate), you will receive a letter outlining the University's policy on official and unofficial withdrawals. Students no longer attending class are encouraged to officially withdraw.

Should you choose to follow University procedures and withdraw by the University deadline, you will have an official withdrawal date, and your financial aid refund calculation will be done according to the Federal or Pro-Rata Refund Policy. Contracted charges (tuition, computer and health fees, room and board will be assessed based on University policy and the official withdrawal date and will be adjusted downward, when appropriate.

If you are identified on the mid-semester class list as “not attending” class and receive a final grade of “F” you will be classified by the Office of Student Financial Aid as an unofficial withdrawal for Federal financial aid purposes. This classification is only used for students who do not satisfactorily complete half-time enrollment hours.

Once you are classified as an unofficial withdrawal, you will be given an opportunity to document a last date of attendance through the submission of graded papers, tests, lab assignments, etc., to the Office of Student Financial Aid. The last date of documented attendance at the half-time enrollment level is used to calculate the refund to Federal financial aid accounts according to the Federal or Pro-Rata Refund Policy. If you cannot document a last date of attendance, it will be assumed that you did not attend the class. If half-time enrollment cannot be documented, then you are not eligible for any Federal financial aid.

If you unofficially withdraw, you will not receive a downward adjustment in contracted University charges. Therefore, any refund due to the Federal financial aid accounts is your responsibility and will appear on your next University bill.

This policy is in accordance with the Higher Education Amendments of 1992, 34 CFR section 668.22 Institutional Refunds and Repayments.
