Information for Faculty and Staff
If I get sick and need to miss work, do I have to provide a doctor’s note?
Please consult your supervisor as you normally would about any work absence. The online absence form used by some units may be accessed from the HR self-service site. Click on the "Personal" tab at the top of the page and look for "Online Absence Report" under the heading "Time Reporting."
Can supervisors send sick employees home?
Yes—the university must maintain a safe and healthy environment, and supervisors have broad discretion over when and where employees work.
Can supervisors change employees’ job assignments when colleagues are out sick?
Yes—the university generally has the right to temporarily change job responsibilities or work schedules as needed to maintain essential functions. In some cases, employees with certain skills may be assigned outside their normal units. Supervisors will notify affected employees about all changes, including when and where to report to work.
Can I work from home if I’m worried about catching influenza from colleagues?
Ask your supervisor. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to establish flexible work arrangements. Common-sense precautions like getting an influenza vaccination and washing your hands frequently are the best way to avoid catching influenza.
Where can I get more information?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers the latest influenza information.
The university’s Critical Incident Management Plan for public health emergencies offers detailed guidelines and continuity plans, some of which may be utilized during this influenza season. Questions and answers regarding human resources contingency planning are located here.
