The University’s web presence is made up of pages and sites that serve a wide range of purposes and audiences. This policy recognizes that any attempt to apply a single set of standards to such a diverse collection would be inappropriate and ultimately ineffective. Therefore, for the purposes of this policy document, University web sites have been grouped into five levels and the standards are written specifically to each individual level. These levels are defined as follows: University Home Page Site – The home page site is the front door of the University, and is made up of the University home page and a collection of supporting pages. The home page site will adhere to the strictest application of the standards outlined in this document. Collegiate and Primary Central Administration Sites – This level is made up of all the collegiate sites, each of the vice presidential-level sites, the provost’s site, and a few other primary University sites. A complete list of these sites is below:
Note: The Carver College of Medicine has a dual role in regard to this policy. The Carver College of Medicine is both part of University of Iowa Health Care and a college within the University proper. For the purposes of these standards, the main site for the Carver College of Medicine will employ the standards of this level and of the University of Iowa Health Care level (see University of Iowa Health Care below). Departments in the Carver College of Medicine, however, will fall only under the standards for the University of Iowa Health Care level. Department and Unit Sites – This level is made up of all the campus units below the collegiate or vice presidential-level, including departments, service units, centers, institutes, and programs. Note: The departments and units in the Carver College of Medicine are part of the University of Iowa Health Care level (see University of Iowa Health Care below), and should follow that set of standards. Publicly Accessible Application and Resource Sites – This level is made up of the web-based resources and applications that provide services from a college or unit, but which exist as a site separate from the sponsor/owner site. Some examples of such applications and resource sites include:
University of Iowa Health Care – This level is made up of the University Hospitals and Clinics and the Carver College of Medicine. University of Iowa Health Care serves a different audience from the rest of the University, and as such it has a separate identity system. The standards for University of Iowa Health Care outlined in this document have been adjusted to meet these different needs. Note: The Carver College of Medicine has a dual role in regards to this policy. The Carver College of Medicine is both part of University of Iowa Health Care and a college within the University proper. For the purposes of these standards, the top-level site for the Carver College of Medicine will employ the standards for both the University of Iowa Health Care level and of the level for collegiate and primary central administrative sites (see Collegiate and Primary Central Administration Sites above). Department and resource sites in the College of Medicine, however, will fall only under the standards for the University of Iowa Health Care level. Other Pages Within the University Web Space – There are many other levels of web pages and web sites within the University web space. Some examples from this other level include:
Sites and pages in this ‘other’ category are not bound by any of the standards outlined in this document, with one exception. If the University logo and wordmark are used, they must be applied within the guidelines outlined in the section Long-Term Standards: University Identity Elements. Note: All web pages hosted through The University of Iowa network are governed under Chapter 19 of the University Operations Manual: Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources. If you’re not sure the level of standards that apply to your site, University Relations would be happy to help. Please e-mail the University webmaster at webmaster@uiowa.edu. |
