Target 8a: Increase to 65% the percentage of Ph.D. recipients obtaining academic employment within six months of graduation.

Target 8a
Percentage of Ph.D. recipients obtaining academic employment within six months of graduation

Since 1996, there has been a significant increase in the number of Ph.D. recipients entering postdoctoral positions in an academic setting immediately after graduation. Because this group should be included in the academic employment category, the target for this indicator has been raised to 65%. The data for all years reported also have been changed.

Target 8b: Increase to 35% the percentage of Ph.D. recipients obtaining nonacademic employment within six months of graduation.

Target 8b
Percentage of Ph.D. recipients obtaining nonacademic employment within six months of graduation

Postdoctoral students in academic positions had been included in this category, but they have been moved to Target 8a. The target has changed to 35%, and the data for all years reported also have been changed.

Target 8c: Decrease to 0% the percentage of Ph.D. recipients not obtaining employment or not reporting within six months of graduation.

Target 8c
Percentage of Ph.D. recipients not obtaining employment (or not reporting) within six months of graduation

Starting this year, the percentage of Ph.D. recipients not obtaining employment and not reporting within six months of graduation will be reported separately. During 2001-02, the percentage of Ph.D. recipients not reporting employment within six months of graduation remained at 8%, and the percentage of Ph.D. recipients not obtaining employment remained at 1%.
