David Skorton looks out over campus

I am proud to present to you The University of Iowa's 2003 annual report. The University of Iowa has long been known as a center of creativity. With world-renowned performing and visual arts programs, the Iowa Writers' Workshop and International Writing Program that are models for the rest of the world, innovative scientific research pro-grams, and a pioneering tradition of giving academic credit for creative work, Iowa remains a leader in invention, innovation, and imagination.

Yet creativity in our University community is not limited to specific programs, nor to particular faculty, staff, or students. The imaginative spirit suffuses our entire campus. It may be manifested in theatre students modeling patient behavior for medical students, a group of business professors inventing unique electronic markets, a humanities department creating a new curriculum, or a UI graduate bringing an arts program to her hometown.

The stories in this annual report show myriad ways in which The University of Iowa community brings creativity to bear on all its work as we fulfill our teaching, research, and service missions. The creative spirit informs all we do in our quest to serve the needs of our state, our nation, and our world.
