The center's research and outreach efforts focus primarily on rural and agricultural populations at risk for rural and environmental diseases and injuries. EHSRC projects target issues such as genetic and environmental risk factors for birth defects, the role of grain dusts in airway inflammation and airflow obstruction, risk factors for farm work-related injuries, health effects associated with elevated concentrations of radon gas, and the application of new technologies to remove pesticides and other agricultural hazardous wastes from the environment. The center also sponsors a summer institute for rural youth, which provides environmental health sciences educational opportunities for high school students from small towns across Iowa.
