In addition to the reporting obligations of Academic Administrative Officers (AAOs), some university employees, both those designated as AAOs and others, may be designated as mandatory reporters under Iowa’s child abuse reporting law (Iowa Code Section 232.67-232.75) on the basis of their occupations, professional certifications or licensure.

These “mandatory reporters” under state law are professionals who have frequent contact with minors, generally in one of the following disciplines: health (including mental health), education, law enforcement, child care and social work.

All University of Iowa faculty, staff and students are strongly encouraged to report child abuse to the proper authorities.

Employees who need assistance in determining whether they are a designated “mandatory reporter” under the Code of Iowa should consult their supervisor, or call the Office of the General Counsel at 319-335-3696.
