If you are considering reporting sexual misconduct, there are several avenues available depending on the type of offense and your desired remedy. The University recommends that students who have experienced sexual misconduct contact the UI Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator, but other resources-including certified victim advocates and law enforcement-are available 24 hours a day.
UI Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator
The UI Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator serves as the contact person for students making formal complaints about sexual misconduct, stalking, and/or domestic violence.

It is important to note that while the University makes every effort to safeguard the identities of students, faculty, and staff who report sexual misconduct, the Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator may need to report incidents to an investigating office. Individuals who seek confidential advice or support can utilize services listed on the Confidentiality in Reporting Policy Violations page.
Victim Advocacy
The Rape Victim Advocacy Program provides free advice, information, and assistance, including a 24-hour crisis line. It’s a resource for people who need immediate help or the assurance that their confidentiality is protected by state law.

While the University values and honors confidentiality, some units and individuals are obligated by policy or law to report violations.

Criminal Violations
University of Iowa Police and other area police departments investigate sexual misconduct when victims wish to file criminal charges. They strive to protect victims’ identities throughout the investigation and prosecution process.
Civil Remedies
There are several civil remedies available in instances of sexual misconduct. These include:
- No trespass orders
- Restraining orders
- No contact orders
