Staff Language and Culture Services

General Information

Translation and interpretation are just two of the ways that Staff Language and Culture Services can help workplaces with English Language Learning employees communicate more effectively.  Translation is the term used for producing a written document in a different language, while interpretation is the word used for repeating what someone has said in a new language.

Confidentiality

Building a relationship of trust with the clients we serve is very important to the Staff Language and Culture Services.  Please note that any personal information we learn in the course of interpreting or translating is kept confidential to the extent possible under University policies, and is not released without the consent of the clients involved.

Faithful Representation of Ideas

Staff Language and Culture Services Services strives to serve everyone in a respectful manner.  Maintaining confidentiality is part of showing respect, and so is faithfully presenting the ideas that clients want to communicate.  Therefore, our Language Specialists and Consultants work hard to present information accurately and completely.  We will also work to remain impartial.

Languages Available for Assistance

The languages we are unable to translate and intrepret vary.  In addition, sometimes adequate versions of the information that needs to be communicated exist on the web, and we can help search for these.  Also, sometimes communication is possible in English even if the employee seems to speak very little of it.  Our trained consultants are experienced at talking with English Language Learning employees.  They also can put in the extra time it can take to try to communicate with someone with limited English proficiency.  Please contact us over the phone (319-335-5822) or by email jane-gressang@uiowa.edu if you have a need.  Appointments usually need to be scheduled  24 hours in advance.
