Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Spending Account Enrollment Process

The process of enrolling in a spending account depends on your employment classification:

Merit Staff

You are eligible to enroll in the Flexible Spending Account program when you are hired and become benefits-eligible at The University of Iowa. The Salary Reduction Agreement for Spending Accounts must be filled out within your first 30 days of employment and forwarded to the Benefits Office. 

You can only make a change to (or enroll in) a spending account during the calendar year if you have a qualifying event.  Qualifying events are events such as marriage/Domestic Partner agreement, divorce/termination of Domestic Partner agreement, birth or adoption of a child, etc.

A change must be requested within 30 days following a qualifying event. To request a change due to a qualifying event, simply fill out and turn in a new Salary Reduction Agreement for Spending Accounts 2013 (pdf). 

Faculty/Professional and Scientific/House Staff

You are eligible to enroll in the Flexible Spending Account when you are hired and become benefits-eligible at The University of Iowa. During your orientation, you will receive an enrollment packet containing your benefit options, which includes the Flexible Spending Account program.

You can only make a change to (or enroll in) a spending account during the calendar year if you have a qualifying event.  Qualifying events are events such as marriage/Domestic Partner agreement, divorce/termination of Domestic Partner agreement, birth or adoption of a child, etc.

To change your benefits you must file a Benefits Change Request Form within 30 days of the event.  The Benefits Office will process the form and open an online enrollment event for you.  For complete instructions please visit http://www.uiowa.edu/hr/benefits/changes.html.

Post Doctoral Scholars/Fellows, Graduate Student with Appointments

You are eligible to participate if you are paid on a monthly basis and your income is subject to state and federal tax withholding.

To enroll, complete the Salary Reduction Agreement for Spending Accounts form.
