Consultants Report
Recruiting and retaining high quality staff for the University requires that our system of compensation and job classification works effectively to support the goals of the University, as well as those of the individual colleges and divisions within.
A comprehensive analysis of the University’s professional and scientific compensation and classification system for non-organized staff was initiated following an administrative review of the Compensation and Classification unit of Human Resources in 2005. Issues identified in this review report, along with concerns expressed during the annual discussions of salary policy with University Staff Council, highlighted the need to re-examine the University’s 30-year old system for classifying and ranking non-organized professional and scientific job classifications, and the compensation structure and practices used in relation to this classification system.
Buck Consultants, a national consulting firm with expertise in job classification and compensation practices and experience working with institutions in higher education, was hired to conduct an analysis of the current system and make recommendations for improvement. The consultants met with the Vice Presidents, Deans, selected administrators, Human Resource leaders and the Executive Committee of Staff Council in May 2007. The final report was presented to the University in September 2007.
This web page is intended to serve as a resource to fully inform the University community about the compensation and classification study and to provide an opportunity to offer opinions during the coming weeks on the recommendations it contains. The site is intended to bring focus to the issues identified in the report and to the objectives of the University system for the compensation and classification of jobs, as we collectively consider the future direction of our system.
