Merit Information

Merit Position Expectations

The following four categories are expectations that foster the ongoing pursuit of excellence and achievement at The University of Iowa.  A statement from each of the four categories must be included in the 'Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities' section for each job description and corresponding performance review instrument.

The "General" statements may apply to all merit positions.  If the duties of a position include functional or administrative responsibilities, the “Supervisory” statements may apply.  However, given the unique nature of each position, you may find that a different level is more appropriate in one, some, or all categories.   Furthermore, if these statements do not adequately describe your expectations for the respective position, you may create others in the spirit of what is offered herein.

The performance review instrument for the respective position also must reflect these expectations. Select each respective position for the suggested performance review formats:

If these statements do not adequately describe your expectations for the respective position, you may create your own Performance Review document. To do so, pick and choose from the four pertinent expections from the categories listed.

If you are using a different performance review instrument it must also reflect these expectations and the Suggested UI Performance Review form has incorporated the four position expectations as a part of it. This form allows for flexibility. For example, it is possible to pick from each level (General, Supervisory) to accurately describe the expectations of a given job description.
