Merit Position Expectations

Expectations that foster the ongoing pursuit of excellence and achievement at The University of Iowa are divided into four categories:

  1. Learning and Professional Development
  2. Civil and Respectful Interactions
  3. Responsibility and Accountability
  4. Diversity and Inclusion

A statement from each of the four categories must be included in the 'Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities' section for each job description and corresponding performance review instrument.

The "General" statements may apply to all merit positions. If the duties of a position include functional or administrative responsibilities, the “Supervisory” statements may apply. However, given the unique nature of each position, you may find that a different level is more appropriate in one, some, or all categories. Furthermore, if these statements do not adequately describe your expectations for the respective position, you may create others in the spirit of what is offered herein.

If these statements do not adequately describe your expectations for the respective position, you may create your own Performance Review document. To do so, pick and choose from the four pertinent expectations from the categories listed.

If you are using a different performance review instrument it must also reflect these expectations. The four position expectations, as well as the level of responsibility, have been incorporated into the Suggested Merit Performance Review - Optional Template (docx). This form allows for flexibility. For example, it is possible to pick from each level (General, Supervisory) to accurately describe the expectations of a given job description.

Merit employees may use the Employee Self Evaluation (docx) form in preparation for their performance review.
