Compensation and Classification Redesign Project -
Process and Timeline
The Compensation and Classification Redesign project will have several distinct phases, as described below. Approximate time frames are provided, but may change as the project moves forward.
You can see a visual representation of the project status at-a-glance on the project flowchart.
- Planning and Vision Alignment: Completed
This phase includes the establishment of steering and advisory committees, communication plans, and system design.
- Internal Valuation: Job Classification and Leveling: Current Phase; Fall 2008-Spring 2010
This phase includes development and implementation of the job classification structure, evaluation and placement of job classifications into levels of job classifications with similar attributes. During this phase, individuals will have the opportunity to describe their job for placement in to the new classification structure.
- Market Pricing: Fall 2009 - Spring 2010
This phase will involve establishing market comparisons and compiling comparison data. Then salary rates for benchmark jobs will be compared against market data.
- Pay Delivery and Administration: Spring 2010 - Fall 2010
The actual salary structure design will be completed during this phase. Salary ranges will be established and job classifications will be assigned to market zones. Salary administration practices will be established.
- Implementation: Fall 2010-Spring 2011
A specific plan for implementation will be developed to include education and training for all staff and supervisors, prior to using the system to guide salary increase decisions for FY 2012.

Other Opportunities for Campus Involvement
The success of the Compensation and Classification Redesign Project will require the involvement of the University’s staff, faculty and leadership.
- Expert panels, drawn from members of the University community, will be used to help define job classifications within a function or job family because this will require their knowledge about the specific function or job family, and University.
- Non-organized professional and scientific staff will be asked to describe their individual jobs through a common questionnaire so that all jobs can be accurately evaluated and classified within the new compensation and classification system.
- Individuals who disagree with the evaluation and job classification of their individual job will have access to an appeal process to reconsider the evaluation of their position.
- Staff Council will be updated monthly regarding the project and will be sponsoring brown bag discussions for staff to be informed about the project and its progress.
The work of the Compensation and Classification Redesign Project will be led by the University Human Resources leadership and staff. The University will continue to use Buck Consultants to assist in this process. The design of the new Compensation and Classification system will be the product of the University, tailored to fit the needs and culture of the University. The project will also utilize a campus steering committee, advisory committee, and numerous expert panels, drawn from members of the University community, to guide and/or provide input to both the process and substance of the project.
