ADA Job Referral Assistance Program
The University of Iowa may offer an ADA accommodation of Job Referral Assistance to employees with disabilities when reasonable accommodation within the currently held University position is not feasible. This program provides eligible and interested employees with employment search, application and interview opportunities at the University.
Program Eligibility:
Employees with ADA covered disabilities and limitations who cannot be reasonably accommodated within the current University of Iowa position.
Program Description:
The program duration is a maximum of three months (90 calendar days).
During the program the employee:
- receives FSDS services of three core consultation sessions (beginning, middle and end of three month period). These services include assistance with application completion, identification of University and community resources, interview skill development, career development, as applicable, and referral to Vocational Rehabilitation Services, etc. FSDS refers the employee, as appropriate, to vacant positions communicates with the current Org Senior HR and HR Representative staff concerning existing assignment and job options and Org Senior HR and FSDS staff communicate with hiring department Org Senior HR and HR Representative staff, as applicable;
- is referred to University vacant and posted jobs within his/her current employment category (Merit, P and S) that the employee qualifies for and seeks to apply;
- is to notify FSDS of vacant positions of interest while a position is posted. FSDS and the Org Senior HR will review the application and position requirements to determine general application eligibility;
- will receive interviews to positions for which applications are received and the employee is considered qualified for;
- is assigned temporary work assignments within the current Org, if available; (work does not need to be within the employee’s classification; however, work must be within the employee ‘s skills, education and capabilities);
- must accept an offer of employment from the hiring department;
- if temporary work assignment is not available during the program period, is able to use paid leave accruals to their exhaustion; and if applicable, Catastrophic Leave donations until the start of disability benefit, as applicable; and
-
who is in a P and S employment category is also eligible to use the University Furlough Networking Program.
At the end of the program period if a position is not obtained:
the employee is able to use paid leave accruals to their exhaustion and if applicable, Catastrophic Leave donations to the start of the disability benefit, if applicable;

interested AFSCME covered employees are eligible to use the balance of the one year unpaid medical leave; and
-
the employee is able to extend the job search using normal application procedures available to all employees and, when applicable, former employees.
At the determination of the program eligibility, the employee’s current position will be released and the current department authorized to recruit and hire for the position. If a position is not obtained during the program, the employee will remain an employee of the current department until the exhaustion of paid leave and if for employees covered by AFSCME, until the exhaustion of unpaid leave.
