Medical Leaves Overview
There are a variety of reasons that cause employees to need the use of sick leave, vacation in lieu of sick leave, and even unpaid time. Below are some basic scenarios to help you understand how university leave accruals and policies may apply to your need for time away from work.
Please discuss your specific situation with your Human Resources Representative, however the links from the Leave section of the employee homepage may give you some basic information about options, dependent upon the reason for your absence.
Consider that the University of Iowa has a philosophy statement regarding expectations of attendance for all employees and that regular and consistent attendance is a requirement of the position you hold. If this is a concern, please work with your Supervisor and HR representative to discuss your specific circumstances.
If you do not have sufficient sick or vacation accruals and will be absent more than 30 work days for the same health condition in one year, you may qualify for catastrophic leave donations. For more information go to the Benefits – Catastrophic Leave page.
