Phases in Our Process to Facilitate Your Transition to Working at The University of Iowa

Phase 1-Welcome and Employment Basics

  • Timing:  Upon accepting our offer of employment
  • Process:  You will be sent an email with a link to receive information about your employment with the University and resources available to you
  • Action you Should Take: Please watch the presentation/video and review the materials designed to help you get off to a good start

Phase 2 - Your First Days of Work/On-the-Job Orientation

  • Timing:  Upon starting work
  • Process: Your supervisor and HR Unit Representative will provide you an orientation to the work unit and your job
  • Action you Should Take:  Use the ideas in "Tips on Starting a New Job" as you begin your orientation
  • Your safety at work is important to us.  The University of Iowa has an Environmental Health and Safety Office that supports that goal.  Learn more about safety by visiting their web site. In addition, your supervisor may assign required specific safety training in an effort to support your development of safe work habits and skills.
  • Ergonomics for staff who work at desks is another important safety consideration. Information on this subject is available on the Employee Self Service web site.  Go to the Learning and Development area on the "personal" tab within Employee self-service, select the "My Training" link. Course is listed within the "available Online Icon Courses" under Ergonomics – Computer Use 2011. Follow the instructions and select "content" at the upper left of your screen and choose either the training slides or the training video and then take the exam.

Phase 3 - University or UI Health Care Orientation

  • Timing: Scheduled during your first month(s) of employment
  • Process: You will be scheduled to attend an orientation program that will provide you an overview of information about the University (and/or UI Health Care) and your benefit programs
  • Action you Should Take: Be prepared to complete necessary paperwork for your benefits.  Information about your benefits can be found on the benefits web site at http://www.uiowa.edu/hr/benefits/

Phase 4 - Periodic Follow-Up

  • Timing: At 30, 90, 180, 270 and 365 days
  • Process: You will receive an email with a link to information that may assist you at different points in your first year
  • Action you Should Take: Please review the information provided and take action as suggested if needed

Phase 5 - Your First Annual Review

  • Timing: Approximately one year from your hire date
  • Process: Your supervisor will meet with you to summarize feedback previously given and work with you to develop performance and development goals for the next year
  • Action you Should Take: Please work with your supervisor to document your accomplishments and develop goals for the next year

Phase 6 - Ongoing

  • Timing: Ongoing
  • Process: You can expect ongoing communication with your supervisor about meeting performance and development goals each year
  • Action you Should Take: Things you can do to keep engaged
    • Keep your positive attitude-all jobs have their ups and downs so keep focused on the good days
    • Be proud of where you work and your contributions-regularly check University accomplishments in publications such as "fyi-Faculty and Staff News" and think about how your work contributed
    • Set yourself up to be recognized-ask your supervisor or coworkers how you did in meeting their needs
    • Request a career planning meeting if you have not had one lately
    • Actively participate in decision-making activities in your unit
    • Ask for feedback and act on it-continue to grow in how your perform
    • If you need resources, it doesn't hurt to ask
    • Seek learning, knowledge and satisfaction from coworkers-they can help support you during difficult times personally and professionally
    • Recognize others-by giving to others, you will feel better and get recognized in return
