Commercial Driver's License Drug Testing

Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations requires incumbents of some University of Iowa positions to hold a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL).  Employing departments of these positions must obtain records pertaining to positive drug or alcohol tests and/or refusals to submit to such testing from an applicant's former employer(s).

  1. Prior to making a job offer to an applicant of a position requiring a CDL, the employing department shall obtain a signed release form from the applicant authorizing release of information from each prior employer within the prior two years.  This information should be limited to records pertaining to drug testing results and refusals to participate in testing.

  2. The employing department shall require the applicant to participate in a pre-employment drug-screening test.

  3. Following acceptance of a job offer, the employing department shall conduct random post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and return-to-duty drug testing of the employee.
