Recommended Process for Requesting AFSCME Stewards
If you have an AFSCME-covered employee that requests union representation for an investigatory meeting then the University manager should do the following:
- If a specific steward is requested by name then you should contact the manager of that steward to coordinate release time and then contact the steward to confirm the time is acceptable.
- If a specific steward is not requested by name then between 10AM and 5PM Monday through Friday you should call the local union hall at 319-338-1212 for a steward assignment.
- If you need a steward outside the hours listed above then you should contact Andy Cooper, AFSCME Exec. VP at 319-331-9624 and ask for a steward to be assigned.
- When a steward is assigned, you should then contact the manager of that steward to coordinate release time and then contact the steward to confirm the time is acceptable.
- Call ELR (5-0052) with any questions or if you do not receive a response within a reasonable period of time.
- Remember that generally 24 hours notice for an investigatory meeting is highly recommended (not necessary in emergency situations) so you should try to provide the steward’s manager with 24 hours notice when coordinating release time.
