Informational Items/Requests

Union Item:  IRL staffing update. 

The Iowa River Landing building is scheduled to open 10/8/12.  New jobs will be posted on jobs@uiowa.edu.  Current employees will move with their departments.


Union Item:  Data on hours worked by 90% employees at UIHC

90% Appointments

The following numbers for UI Health Care employees working at 90% for at least one day during the month of May 2012 were:

Total:  550

University Item:  Steward release requests.

New Business

Union Item:  Discussion of uniform policy for BHS staff (including clerks.) 

Departments involved in pilot project include Dermatology Clinic, Emergence Department, Iowa River Landing, Pediatric Inpatient Unit (3JCP), Neurology/Neurosurgery (6JCP) and Surgical Intensive Care Unit.


Union Item:  Brief report on Diane Matthews-Brown’s recent visit to FM and her assessment of shifts in the FM safety culture.

Diane Matthews-Brown, AFSCME International safety consultant, first came to FM in 2005 in response to a higher than normal worker injury rate.  Employees and management worked together to try to eliminate injuries.  They accessed how employees did their work, the tools they used and the environment they worked in.  Together they made changes that lowered the FM injury rate.  FM will be sponsoring a safety fair for their employees in the fall including vendors, new equipment and wellness booths.


Union Item:  Discussion of custodian at UIHC working out of class, doing pest control, acting as guards, etc.

Management to get more information on bat procedures, location of bats and employees involved.  DPS will pull employees to help in certain situations until help arrives.

Next meeting to take place September 20, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, at the USB.
