What were the benefits of your research experience?
"Where do I begin! Not only has research allowed me to learn about a subject I am very interested in (immunology) on a more in depth level, it has also taught me valuable critical thinking and problem solving skills (through experiment troubleshooting, thinking critically about data and their implications, making decisions about future experiments based on previous results). Research has also made me comfortable working as part of a team, because much of what I do is in collaboration with other members of my lab. Importantly, my research experience, and specifically the opportunities to present research posters, has improved my communication skills and forced me to learn to adapt my presentation style depending on the audience to which I am speaking."
- Emily Gross - ICRU Fellow - Integrative Physiology Major
This research experience has enabled me to learn more about a subject I am deeply interested in. I have cultivated a close relationship with my mentor, and have learned to think critically, follow leads, and conduct original historical research. I have learned how to present an argument coherently and offer substantive evidence to support it.
- Jenny Pray - ICRU Fellow - Dance & International Studies Majors
I was able to incorporate my classes that I have taken with real life experiences & see how theories in Communication Studies can be applied. I received positive feedback and lots of help/advice from my mentor and gained an experience that I feel I could not have had just anywhere! I've gained countless benefits, expanded my knowledge of my major without being in a classroom but still learning. I also feel on a personal level I am more organized, responsible, and self-confident in my abilities which I can apply to the workplace.
- Allie Reiter - ICRU Fellow - Communication Studies, Journalism & Entrepreneurship Majors

How has your research experience changed your career goals?
I think it definitely enhanced my education. It didn't necessarily change my career goals, but it again made me realize my passion for both reporting and politics. It was a really fun way to put both of my passions together in one project.
- Emily Hoerner - ICRU Fellow - Political Science Major
I have realized I do not want to be a PA. I enjoy lab work and would like to continue working in this type of environment.
- Kaitlyn Larkin - ICRU Fellow - Biology Major
My research has given me the skills, interpersonal relationships, and confidence to consider attending graduate school with the goal of getting a Masters or Ph.D. Before research, my future goals included simply getting a job after undergraduate. Now, I have many more options available to me.
- ICRU Fellow - Psychology Major
