Creating Jobs
The University of Iowa is one of the state’s top employers. Directly and indirectly, the University supported 51,818 full-time Iowa jobs during the Tripp Umbach study period—more than 1 in 30 of the state’s total jobs, or about 3.3 percent of the Iowa labor force.
UI-supported jobs include 20,727 faculty, staff, and students employed by the University, plus another 31,091 jobs created directly and indirectly by UI spending.
Higher education tends to offer greater pay and benefits than some business sectors. Since larger salaries translate into more spending by UI employees, the overall impact of University hiring may surpass the impact of other large employers.
The University supports not only its own employees, but also thousands of jobs in virtually every sector of the Iowa economy—construction, business services, hospitality, information technology, and more.
