MVC-391Fx.jpg (5066 bytes) This is me with a big sword in my hand (A manly-man sort of thing, my mom was scared half to death.  She thought I was going to cut the shopkeepers to pieces.)

We're shopping at the old market in Kano.  It is real neat because you get to walk on the ground but it is not hot because there are tin roofs over the passages.

Here we are at the dye pits: the place where they color cloth.  These pits are at least five feet deep and they are filled with indigo dye.  It was real neat because they had cloth that they tied string around in a special way and then dyed it.  It looked so awesome!  They had some that looked like clouds and some had spiral designs.  MVC-400Fx.jpg (6116 bytes)
MVC-419Fx.jpg (2693 bytes) This is the Emir's (the king's) mosque(a building that Muslim's pray in.)  It's only 50 years old.  Several thousand people meet here every Friday to pray.
This is me in front of Gidan Makama Museum next to a canon in the front.  The museum used to be the Emir's house while his palace was being built 550 years ago. MVC-422Fx.jpg (4042 bytes)
MVC-439Fx.jpg (4436 bytes) This is us on Dala Hill, overlooking the city which contains 5 million people.   It was really neat because you could see everything.  You could see the airport, which was outside the city, all the big mosques, and houses as far as the eye can see..
Here we are at the camel market behind a row of camels that have come in from the desert to be slaughtered. MVC-455Fx.jpg (4955 bytes)
MVC-468Fx.jpg (5364 bytes) We are at the cow market where there are at least 100 cows, maybe up to a thousand.    It is really neat to see these cows because my dad has a xylophone made out of cow horns and he always says, when he sees these cows, "Xylophones on the hoof!"
This is one of my friends from Abuja.  He was in Kano and we got to sit on the Emir's balcony on padded seats because of his family.  In Abuja he has a swimming pool. MVC-491Fx.jpg (5377 bytes)
MVC-501Fx.jpg (5543 bytes) These are some riders in Durbar.  They are in one of the first parades.   Their horses have suits on too.  The suits are to protect the horses in battle.
These guys have spears in their hands.  Their horses are also in armor.   Every man and horse looks different except if they are a group of horse riders.   They have come to show their loyalty to the Emir. MVC-513Fx.jpg (5786 bytes)
MVC-521Fx.jpg (2925 bytes) This guy came by three times on stilts.  This time he's holding up one stilt while bouncing on the other.  The second time he was just walking.  The third time he came by with a boy on his shoulders and the boy was not holding on.
This guy in the middle with the plate on a stick was spinning it.  He was throwing it into the air, rolling all over the ground while the plate was still in the air, and by the end of the show the plate was still spinning. MVC-523Fx.jpg (3909 bytes)
MVC-530Fx.jpg (4908 bytes) These are some more warriors.  This time they have blue armor on their horses and golden turbans.
These warriors have long spears for jousting.  Their horses have a kind of velvety red armor with bells on them. MVC-537Fx.jpg (3907 bytes)
MVC-535Fx.jpg (5032 bytes) These guys are doing flips and standing on each other's head and swinging each other around with their arms.
These guys are some more warriors with orange suits and black turbans. MVC-542Fx.jpg (4500 bytes)
MVC-571Fx.jpg (4388 bytes) These guys were juggling sharp objects and catching them without getting hurt at all.   The guy on the left has a bone through his nose.
This guy is part of the royal family. MVC-546Fx.jpg (4025 bytes)
MVC-558Fx.jpg (4140 bytes) This is the Emir.  He has a headdress that no other person can wear and he is under a big purple umbrella and is being fanned.  He is surrounded by his bodyguards. In the background you can see long horn that his men would blow when he moved.
These are the Emir's drummers on camels beating big wooden kettle drums. MVC-563Fx.jpg (4632 bytes)
MVC-595Fx.jpg (5406 bytes) This is us in a town called Saminaka drinking minerals (soft drinks) on the way home.

We had a lot of fun at Durbar!
