The University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication invites applications for a two-semester (Fall and Spring) visiting assistant professor or visiting instructor in the field of mass communication theory. A PhD is required for appointment as a visiting assistant professor. This is a replacement position for a regular faculty member who will be on leave. The initial appointment begins in August 2008 and runs through May 2009.
A master’s degree in journalism or relevant field is required; teaching experience is strongly preferred; applications from qualified doctoral candidates or recipients are welcome.
The individual will teach three courses per semester in our undergraduate and master’s professional programs. There is a specific need for instruction each semester in a large enrollment (250 students), multi-sectioned course that focuses on social scientific approaches to the study of mass communication. Other advanced conceptual or professional courses can be tailored to the expertise of candidates, though there is a preference for TV news production, digital media, visual communication, ethics, law or research methods.
Applicants should send a letter of application—including a section on teaching philosophy (hard copy), a complete CV (hard copy), representative examples of professional work, graduate transcripts and three letters of reference to:
