Journalism & Mass Communication Electronic Reserve Reading Site is available through ICON. Only users registered for a class using the site during the current semester are allowed access. For instruction on using the reserve site, please go to the Virtual Reading Room or the Resource Center Blog.

The Resource Center is a place for students to study, relax between classes, work on group projects, check email, do research, and browse key publications in the field of journalism and mass communications. 

What's Available in the Resource Center?

Writing Assistance Guidelines
WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU:

  1. We can help you identify logical and conceptual problems in your assignment.
  2. We can help you better understand how to correctly cite your sources.
  3. We can help you communicate your ideas with clarity, coherence and readability.
  4. We can help you better use outside sources to strengthen your argument.
  5. We can help you organize your assignment by using techniques like sequencing, transitions and flow.
  6. We can help you assess source quality, especially from Internet.
  7. We can help you with general writing techniques such as mechanics, syntax and word choice.


WHAT WE CANNOT DO FOR YOU:

  1. We cannot guarantee that you will receive an A on any assignment.
  2. We cannot write the paper or assignment for you.
  3. We cannot copy edit your entire assignment.
  4. We cannot interpret your assignment for you. You must go to the instructor for that.
  5. We cannot guarantee the amount of time an assessment of your assignment might take.

Research HELP! Do you need help finding articles for a research paper? would you like to learn how to do better database searches?  Contact Jennifer Raghavan at 335-0510 or jennifer-raghavan@uiowa.edu, or stop in between 8:30-5:00 M-F for help.

Learning Portfolio Help  & Information about Internships: Please e-mail jmc-internships@uiowa.edu to schedule a time. Information about events and opportunities is always available in the Resource Center, near the photocopier

Writing Assistance with Journalism writing assignments.  The Writing Assistance Project is staffed by J-MC teaching assistants.

Conference Room is available for students who want to work on group projects, hold student organizations meetings, or conduct phone interviews.  A scheduling book is available at the front desk to reserve the room.

Journals, Magazines and Books in the field of journalism and mass communications are available for checkout. Major US Newspapers as well as Iowa Community newspapers are available for reading in the Resource Center. Required Textbooks and for most journalism courses are on Reserve at the front desk. In addition, other reserve readings and videos can be found here.

Computers Play media files, DVDs, write papers, conduct research, or check your email. Headphones are available for watching DVDs or playing media files. Ask at the front desk. Laptops are available for checkout to use within the Resource Center.

Photocopier Copies are 15 cents per page -- accepts change and single dollar bills.

Printer  Due to popular demand, we now have a black and white laser printer that is set up to print from any of the 6 computers in the Resource Center as well as any of the laptops that are available for checkout.   You need to set up a print account on ISIS in order to print documents.
