Central Microscopy Research Facility - 8/5/09
Location: 79 EMRB

Participants will be introduced to a wide range of microscopy instrumentation and techniques in the country's best university microscopy facility. The recently installed $1,400,000.00 transmission electron microscope will be featured on the tour. Applications of microscopy to a wide range of biomedical and materials science research on campus will be presented. Project examples may include hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, atmospheric dust particles, the health affects of nanoparticles, prostate cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, hypertension, biomaterials, cancer, bioremediation and other disciplines. Specimens will be shown on the different microscopes. The number of participants will be limited to 24. The tours will start at 79 Eckstein Medical Research Building.

Auguste Rodin's Jean de Fiennes, Clothed - 9/2/09

Rodin is often regarded as the first modern sculptor, and this talk will take a look at his artistic traditions and innovations.

The John Martin Rare Book Room - 10/7/09

The John Martin Rare Book Room houses one of the finest collections of rare medical works in the country and is open to the public. This presentation will feature a first-hand look at original works dating from the 15th to the 20th century, including anatomical atlases, herbals, surgery manuals, and other books that have defined and changed the history of the health sciences.

Works on Paper from the UIMA Collection - 11/4/09

An orientation to the UIMA@IMU visual classroom, this Iowa Gems session will consist of a brief look at how the Richey Ballroom was renovated to be used as a gallery space. Fisher will give an overview of the considerations about the works selected for exhibition and the thematic concepts of areas of the gallery. One feature of the visual classroom will be emphasized: the classroom study are. Mainly used for the study of works on paper and ceramics, this feature is crucial to carrying out the mission of the UIMA. Hear and experience how this is done for classes during the academic year.

Elizabeth Catlett - 12/9/09

Elizabeth Catlett is a groundbreaking artist for many reasons, and her professional career began at The University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. A student of Grant Wood, she heeded his advice to “paint what you know” and created one of the great bodies of work celebrating the African-American woman. Receiving her Masters of Fine Arts degree in sculpture in 1940, she was the first person to ever attain that degree. A long and celebrated list of achievements followed as she created a body of work that spanned several media and seven decades. This Iowa Gems session will focus on her figurative work called Stepping Out, located in the lounge area of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Western Art and African Art: A Cross-Cultural Comparison - 1/6/10

This session of Iowa Gems will look at some of the constants and variables of looking at art. Looking a Western art, the viewer senses a familiarity with form and design; do these somewhat automatic skills come in useful when looking at African art? The traditional themes found in European and American art are easily recognizable to the museum visitor, but do works of African art share similar themes?
