Position Specific Information

The first week of employment is the best time to make job expectations clear, start any necessary training, and help to create work habits that will benefit both the new employee and the department. It is critical that the supervisor and new employee meet and discuss the requirements of the job. If any gaps exist between what is expected of the new employee and what they already know, then training needs to occur. This is also the time to explain how performance will be reviewed, how standards have been set and how they will be measured. Ongoing feedback will be important in the performance management process. Some supervisors find it helpful to have a six-month review in addition to an annual review the first year of a new staff member’s employment. If you choose to do this, please let the new staff member know in advance when the first review will occur.

Listed below are additional resources and tools to help the supervisor prepare for the new employee.
