Typical Behaviors for Two Levels of
Merit Position Expectations

The following is a list of job performance criteria and representative behaviors to illustrate the newly added position expectations relating to civil and respectful interactions, diversity and inclusion, learning and professional development, and responsibility and accountability. These are illustrative examples, not an exhaustive list.

Note that these are examples; each of these would not necessarily always apply, while others may.

General

Civil and Respectful Interactions

Demonstrates respect for all members of the University community in the course of performing one’s duties and in response to administrators, supervisors, coworkers, and customers; constructively brings forward workplace concerns to coworkers and/or supervisor.

Readily provides and accepts support and assistance in a professional and friendly manner.  
Provides advice when requested and/or appropriate in a constructive and helpful manner.
Contributes to an overall pleasant work and team environment in both actions and speech.

Typical behaviors might include:

Diversity and Inclusion

Welcomes the richness of talent from a diverse workforce and recognizes that diversity brings stimulation, challenge, and energy that contribute to a productive and effective workplace.

Is willing to share with and learn from others who may not share common backgrounds or experiences.
Is open to and accepting of new and/or alternative approaches, methods and solutions to workplace issues.

Typical behaviors might include:

Learning and Professional Development

Seeks opportunities to enhance one’s own knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to one’s current position and/or to prepare for potential future roles and overall career development that contribute to the mission and goals of the institution. 

Demonstrates a willingness to learn.
Welcomes learning new duties, tasks and changes in procedures and processes that improve the workplace.

Typical behaviors might include:

Responsibility and Accountability

Represents the interests of the University and of unit leadership in the use of resources to meet service and productivity demands within unit goals and budgets; strives to promote continual process and quality improvement.

Demonstrates good stewardship.

Typical behaviors might include:

Supervisory

Civil and Respectful Interactions

Establishes and models collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty and service; encourages similar standards and ethics for all unit members; constructively manages conflict.

Sets a standard of expectations for the workplace by discussing, providing examples and consistently demonstrating behaviors that support all coworkers.

Typical behaviors might include:

Diversity and Inclusion

Provides each employee with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the unit, while managing the talents, strengths and behaviors of each individual in a diverse work group.  Works to assure that all employees are respected and treated consistent with University policies in regard to equal employment opportunity and diversity.

Ensures that the variety of skills different employees bring to the workplace are recognized, acknowledged, utilized and further developed.

Develops an awareness of diversity in the workplace and may suggest discussion of issues that affect the workplace.

Typical behaviors might include:

Learning and Professional Development

Pursues opportunities for personal development that relate to supervision/management.  Encourages employees to attend to the growth of their personal and professional capacity.  Relates such opportunities to the unit’s and the University’s mission and values.

Encourages skill development and identifies and/or provides opportunities for employees’ personal career development and enhancement of the unit’s role in the institution.

Typical behaviors might include:

Responsibility and Accountability

Inspires and motivates others to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of University resources, setting expectations, measuring success through individual performance evaluations, and influencing organizational results.

Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate expectations and share information.
Consistently provides a model for productive and responsible work behaviors.
Establishes standards and measures of performance for each duty and regularly communicates with each employee regarding their performance.
