Research Professional Development Program—
Biomedical Series
We are pleased to announce an innovative new professional development series specifically for UI research professionals. The Research Staff Professional Development Program – Biomedical Series will begin in March 2009. This certificate series is designed to provide a broad overview of the current state of biomedical research and address the needs of research staff outlined in the Survey Report. The Biomedical Series consists of concise, 60-90 minute courses that may be taken individually or according to the certificate series requirements. Although this program is targeted at P&S research staff currently engaged in biomedical research, UI faculty and other UI staff members are also encouraged to enroll.
Participants who wish to earn the Biomedical Series certificate will be required to take a total of 12 courses over the next 12 months in the areas of Core Technology, Core Disciplines, Major Disease Topics, and Personal Development. Most of the courses will be taught on the first Tuesday of the month at 8:00 AM to minimize impact on the work day. University of Iowa experts in these areas will teach the courses, and a minimum of three courses will be required from each area. In addition, participants and their faculty supervisors are invited to attend an orientation session and kickoff presentation by Mike Apicella, Associate Dean for Research in the Carver College of Medicine. At the conclusion of the series, there will be a celebration ceremony and reception featuring UI research administrators. Further details about the curriculum are available here.
To enroll in the certificate series, staff members need to complete an application form, which must be signed by their supervisor. The application form, program flyers and other information will be available on this site within the next few weeks.
Faculty and staff members who wish to enroll in only one or two individual courses will be able to do so through Employee Self-Service in the near future. Once logged in to the Employee Self-Service site, click on the My Training link under Learning and Development. Please note that participants in the certificate series will receive priority registration status for a course if it becomes full.
Whether you want to expand your areas of expertise or need to update your skills, these courses will help you stay abreast of the latest innovations in biomedical research. This is an excellent opportunity to explore advanced laboratory technologies and learn about new procedures to increase your productivity. Participants will explore current trends, build awareness of the diversity of biomedical research on campus and network with fellow UI researchers. We hope you will join us for this exciting journey into the frontiers of biomedical research.
Please review our list of Frequently Asked Questions about the program for further information. If you have any additional questions about the Biomedical Series curriculum, please contact Ken Moore. For questions about registration, please contact Sean Hesler.
The current Biomedical Series Committee members are: Diana Boeglin, Sean Hesler, Cheryl Hoogerwerf-Reardon, Ruth Hurlburt, Ken Moore, and Kristine Sigsbee.
The Biomedical Series is sponsored by the Research Staff Development Work Team, Staff Council, Learning and Development, the Carver College of Medicine, and the Office of the Vice President for Research.
