The project began when the City of Iowa City, the Legal Clinic and the Johnson County Coalition for Persons with Disabilities teamed up to design, evaluate and promote Iowa’s first universal design model home. The project team provided technical assistance, research and advice to the city, the builder, contractors, electricians on universal design guidelines, appliances and related matters. The home garnered several awards and nationwide publicity, which prompted officials to adopt the first universal design building code in Iowa.
