The Iowa Program for Assistive Technology asked the Law and Policy In Action program to think of ways to address the critical shortage of housing that is affordable, accessible and usable. The UD Legislation Project was established to eliminate the need for costly retrofits by promoting barrier-free design and requiring, through statute or administrative agency rule, that homes built with public funds include minimum access features. This multi-phase project spanned several years and included several different novel and creative approaches. The Final Report letter describes each phase, step-by-step, including initiatives that were successful or had mixed results.
