Current Position:

Microbiologist/Principal Investigator, Bacteriology Division, The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Ft. Detrick, MD (2000 - present). http://www.usamriid.army.mil/

Research Areas/Interests:

Because the Bacillus anthracis spore is the infectious particle for the disease anthrax, a deeper understanding of spore composition, assembly and function could be very useful in combating this threat. Spores of B. anthracis are encased by an additional structure of unknown function called the exosporium. This relatively poorly studied structure appears to be composed of a thin basal layer and hair-like projections. My research focuses on investigating the program of B. anthracis spore coat morphogenesis and exosporium biosynthesis in the virulent Ames strain and investigating the roles of key spore coat proteins in the progression of the disease.
