Position: Senior Research Biochemist, Dow Biotechnology Core R&D (2000 - present)

  • Development of capability for biocatalyst discovery, HTP enzyme screening and bioprocess development in aqueous systems and non-aqueous media.
  • Project management for biocatalysis-based development of new products and preparation of chiral intermediates.

Major Research Areas

  • Target-directed biocatalytic production of custom/fine chemicals and chiral intermediates for the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceuticals
  • Applied enzymology and whole cell biocatalysis: enantioselective oxidations, asymmetric reductions, enantioselective hydrolysis (or synthesis) of esters, amides and nitriles
  • Enzyme assay development, enzyme performance optimization, process development, biocatalysis in biphasic systems and non-aqueous media
  • Development of methods for analysis or separation of chiral compounds, high throughput screening, enzymatic cofactor regeneration
  • Microbial metabolism of polycyclic and heterocyclic aromatic compounds
  • Isolation and characterization of bacteria that metabolize environmental pollutants

Highlights & Honors

  • Author or co-author on over 35 technical publications (peer reviewed articles, book chapters and patent applications)
  • NIH Predoctoral Fellowship in Biotechnology, 1992-1995. Awarded through the Iowa Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing
  • Raymond W. Sarber Fellowship Award, 1994 (ASM)
