Medical Imaging Application Software (MIAS)

MIAS lists some of open and popular medical imaging software solutions, which are downloadable from Internet. These software are installed on our lab's computing facility and on our medical imaging computational grid ( MICG). The software are widely-used open source software and/or popular libraries for medical imaging. These application software help the researchers and developers in our lab to process research and clinic based medical imaging, and assist us to develop parallel algorithms and methods for medical imaging, such as parallel medical imaging reconstruction, segregation, registration, enhancement, etc. The software also help us to visualize image data by using popularly valid software package such as VDK, medical data analysis and research or clinic diagnosis. The following software or libraries packages are available at our lab and some have been installed on our computer systems. The detailed and updated information about each software package can be found at the software's developers and providers and their web site are listed hereby.

VTK

The Visualization ToolKit (VTK) is an open source, freely available software system for 3D computer graphics, image processing, and visualization widely used around the world. VTK consists of a C++ class library, and several interpreted interface layers. VTK is developed and provided by Kitware, Inc. VTK supports a wide variety of visualization algorithms including scalar, vector, tensor, texture, and volumetric methods; and advanced modeling techniques such as implicit modeling, polygon reduction, mesh smoothing, cutting, contouring, and Delaunay triangulation. In addition, dozens of imaging algorithms have been directly integrated to allow the user to mix 2D imaging / 3D graphics algorithms and data. National Library of Medicine's Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK) is an open-source software system to support the Visible Human Project. ITK employs leading-edge segmentation and registration algorithms in two, three, and more dimensions. The Insight Toolkit was developed by six principal organizations, three commercial (Kitware, GE Corporate R&D, and Insightful) and three academic (UNC Chapel Hill, University of Utah, and University of Pennsylvania). Additional team members include Harvard Brigham & Women's Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University. MITK stands for Medical Imaging ToolKit.It is a C++ library for integrated medical image processing and analyzing developed by the Medical Image Processing Group (guided by Dr. Tian), Key Laboratory of Complex Systems and Intelligence Science, Institute of Automation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The development of MITK is inspired by the big success of open source software VTK and ITK, and its main purpose is to provide medical image community a consistent framework to combine the function of medical image segmentation, registration and visualization. MITK, as the style of VTK, uses the traditional Object-Oriented design method, rather than the use the Generic Programming style in ITK, which makes the syntax and interface of MITK is simple and intuitive. Software

ImageJ is a public domain Java image processing program inspired by NIH Image for the Macintosh. It runs, either as an online applet or as a downloadable application, on any computer with a Java 1.4 or later virtual machine. Downloadable distributions are available for Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X and Linux. It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. It can read many image formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and "raw". It supports "stacks", a series of images that share a single window. It is multithreaded, so time-consuming operations such as image file reading can be performed in parallel with other operations.

It can calculate area and pixel value statistics of user-defined selections. It can measure distances and angles. It can create density histograms and line profile plots. It supports standard image processing functions such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering. It does geometric transformations such as scaling, rotation and flips. Image can be zoomed up to 32:1 and down to 1:32. All analysis and processing functions are available at any magnification factor. The program supports any number of windows (images) simultaneously, limited only by available memory. Spatial calibration is available to provide real world dimensional measurements in units such as millimeters. Density or gray scale calibration is also available. ImageJ was designed with an open architecture that provides extensibility via Java plugins. Custom acquisition, analysis and processing plugins can be developed using ImageJ's built in editor and Java compiler. User-written plugins make it possible to solve almost any image processing or analysis problem.

ImageJ is being developed on Mac OS X using its built in editor and Java compiler, plus the BBEdit editor and the Ant build tool. The source code is freely available.
