NIH is the nation's medical research
agency – making important medical discoveries that improve health and
save lives.The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting
and supporting medical research.Helping to lead the way toward important medical
discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives, NIH scientists
investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and
even cures for common and rare diseases.NIH research impacts. Composed of
27 Institutes and Centers, the NIH provides leadership and financial support
to researchers in every state and throughout the world. For over a century,
the National Institutes of Health has played an important role in improving
the health of the nation. The NIH traces its roots to 1887 with the creation
of the Laboratory of Hygiene at the Marine Hospital in Staten Island, NY.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent
federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of
science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure
the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion,
we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported
basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields
such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the

DOE
has four strategies: (1) Defense Strategic Goal: To protect

to the Nation’s defense; (2) Energy Strategic Goal: To protect
our national and economic security by promoting a diverse supply and delivery
of reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy (3) Science Strategic
Goal: To protect our national and economic security by providing world-class
scientific research capacity and advancing scientific knowledge (4) Environment
Strategic Goal: To protect the environment by providing a responsible resolution
to the environmental legacy of the Cold War and by providing for the permanent
