MNH’s Volunteer Mission: Our Volunteer Program is dedicated to supporting the Museum in its mission to foster understanding and a sense of wonder for our natural and cultural worlds, as well as to providing our volunteers with exciting opportunities for personal growth and education.
The Museum of Natural History has many volunteer opportunities for children, teens and adults!
Front Desk Attendant: Work in the lobby at our Museum shop and welcome desk. Greet and orient visitors, sell items in the gift shop, and monitor galleries. (Must be at least 16 years old)
Birthday Party Attendants: Assist the Education Staff in making a child’s birthday extra special by helping with hands-on activities, fossil time and more!
Night at the Museum Attendants: Assist the Education Staff after dark with this fun children’s program. The evening includes pizza, activities, exploration, and more!
Tour Guide: Lead interactive tours of Iowa Hall to school groups of all ages, daycares, scout troops, and others. Show others Iowa's fascinating geologic past, ancient cultures, and complex ecosystem. (Must be at least 13 years old)
Educational Program Assistant: Help develop programs and activities for the community: everything from Halloween parties to adult educational classes to craft activities for kids.
Contribute! Help others learn about Iowa's natural history and help future researchers by organizing collections.
Experience! Gain experience operating a sales shop, developing programming, or working with our collections of fossils, animals, and other specimens.
Learn! Find out more about the history of the natural sciences in Iowa from books, articles, and fellow volunteers and staff at the museum.
Be Recognized! Awards will be given at semi-annual Volunteer Recognition Events.
Recommendations! Based on their record, experienced volunteers can ask for letters of recommendation.
Parking! Volunteers can park in the Iowa Memorial Union Ramp free of charge while they are working.
10,000 Hours Show! The Museum of Natural History is a participating non-profit organization in the 10,000 Hours program. Upon completion of 10 hours of volunteer service, participants in the program are entitled to a free ticket to a concert arranged by the 10,000 Hours program. (UI students only)
