Smart investments in facilities and infrastructure promise to keep our campus vital, cut waste, and reduce our environmental footprint.
Greener Buildings
The University has set its sights on Silver certification or higher for all new building projects submitted for review under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building System. Some of the characteristics that make these projects green:
P. Sue Beckwith Boathouse (completed 2009, LEED Gold certified)
- Pervious concrete to reduce storm water runoff
- Geothermal heating and daylight harvesting
- Local and recycled materials
- Built-in flood-mitigation strategies
Institute for Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation (completed 2009, LEED Silver certified)
- Site selected for minimal environmental impact
- Erosion control and surface water run-off plans
- Reflective concrete parking lot
- 81 percent of wood products from Forest Stewardship Council-certified sources
State Hygienic Laboratory (completed 2010)
- Uses Labs 21 Design Criteria that apply LEED principles to laboratories
- Construction waste recycled
- Indoor air quality management during construction and before occupancy
- Environmentally sustainable cleaning practices for maintenance
Stuit Hall (Old Music Building) renovation (projected completion 2010)
- Rain garden to capture roof storm water
- Occupancy sensors to control electric lights
- New insulation, replacement windows, and energy efficient mechanicals
- Recycling storage and collection centers
College of Public Health Academic Building (projected completion 2011)
- Maximal use of natural light
- Storm drainage that uses vegetation and landscaping, not curbs and gutters
- City location close to public transit
- Bike storage areas and changing rooms
Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building (projected completion 2014)
- Reflective and green roofing
- Low-emitting sealants, paints, carpet, and other materials
- Water-efficient landscaping

Renewal Milestones
The historic flood of 2008 set the stage for recovery and renewal efforts that are transforming the UI campus. Over the next few years, buildings eligible for funding by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be replaced or restored—in all cases, better than ever.
The following targets for schematic designs, construction contracts, and substantial completion or occupancy are predicated on FEMA review and funding approval. They’re subject to change, but offer a glimpse of what lies ahead:
