“The Cardinal’s Song”

Sometime in March,
When my spirit is cold
to the bone,
and gray runs endlessly
through my veins,
I awake to the cardinal’s song.
Every cell in my body knows…
it’s SPRING!
My heart jumps
with the joy of being.
I clean the winter dust
from household corners
and old forgotten muscles
who stretch just to be an inch
nearer the sun.
I announce to the world
that cold gray skies have challenged
my very being,
yet I have won
with each cherished note
of the cardinal’s song.
