“Disabled Beauty Advocates for Wildlife”

This Barn Owl, with only one wing, represents the fact that even a disabled bird can serve an important purpose. She is a symbol of the diversity of life forms with which we share a beautiful and complex environment. As a wildlife rehabilitator’s bird who visits schools, clubs, and other public events, she now helps to inform about the variety and needs of species that live here.

Although Barn Owls and some other birds are rarely seen, they have the same basic needs as we humans and all animals. We all need clean air and water, food, shelter, and a reasonable amount of safety. Declining numbers of Barn Owls mean that these needs are no longer being met. Our environment is not as healthy as it should be to support the wildlife diversity we value and celebrate here.

Even in the best environments, accidents happen. But in spite of her accident, the look in her gaze invites all who meet her, or see this image, to consider our place and responsibilities. Each species, including ours, has an important niche that, when it works well in concert with all other niches, sustains a habitable environment for all. We continue her campaign by submitting this image so more can see her and contemplate the message she delivers.
