"Tobacco and oral disease; strategies for dental professional interventions"

An Educational Workshop

Iowa City, Iowa, June 13th-16th 2000

Co-ordinator: Dr Christopher Squier, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, College of Dentistry, University of Iowa.

Overview

The Workshop will approach the challenge of tobacco cessation by a logical sequence of presentations addressing:
    • an introduction to the problem of tobacco use;
    • the nature and extent of tobacco related oral disease;
    • pharmacologic and behavioral approaches to intervention;
    • successes and limitations of existing approaches to intervention and development of best practices in the dental setting. This component would also deal with projects in different cultural and geographic settings as well as with cost and remuneration.
The final component of the Workshop would be a section on outcomes and design of new interventions in which collaborations between participants that could lead to clinical trials would be discussed.Sponsored by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, University of Iowa. Supported by grants from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (R25 DE13577) and Zila Biomedicals.
