President's Letter
It is with great pride that I present the University of Iowa's 2011 annual report. I am very proud that our students, faculty, and staff continue to lead and innovate in teaching and learning, research, creative endeavor, and service to our state and society—and this report shares the scope and depth of this year’s achievements.
Our students’ accomplishments are truly inspirational. They make an imprint on the world through their ambitious research and scholarship, their standout performances in athletics and the arts, their generous contributions to public engagement, and their academic pursuits in more than 100 areas of study. The creative, groundbreaking work of our faculty and staff makes significant advances in the discovery of knowledge and provides solutions to pressing issues and needs in our local community, our state, our nation, and our world.
Our world-class health care organization—Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center—leads the way through innovative research, state-of-the-art care, excellent service, and exceptional outcomes. The university as a whole contributes $6 billion to Iowa’s economy annually—and every $1 in state appropriations to the university results in a greater than 1,500 percent return for Iowans.
I am amazed—but not surprised—by the outstanding accomplishments of the University of Iowa community. Through this report, we offer you a sampling of the ways the university is on the leading edge.
