Football squad notches third straight bowl win at 2010 Insight Bowl
The University of Iowa football team won its third consecutive bowl game—a streak unmatched in school history—in December 2010, toppling the Missouri Tigers, 27–24, in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz.
A record crowd of 53,453 watched first-year running back Marcus Coker set some records of his own. The 2010 Insight Bowl Offensive Player of the Game, in just his fourth start of his Hawkeye career, rushed 33 times for 219 yards and a pair of scores. The attempts and yardage set new standards for Hawkeye bowl games.
Sophomore Micah Hyde, who was named the 2010 Insight Bowl Defensive Player of the Game, had a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth period, a score that proved to be the game-winning play. The return is an Iowa bowl record and the eighth longest in school history.
Senior quarterback Ricky Stanzi completed 11 of 21 passes for 200 yards. Stanzi, who would be drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in April 2011, finished his Iowa career with 7,377 passing yards, 56 touchdown passes, and, perhaps most importantly, a 26-9 record as the Hawkeyes’ starting quarterback.
Iowa improved to 14-10-1 in bowl games; head coach Kirk Ferentz now holds a 6-3 mark in postseason play.
